Facing Your Mice Situations with Faith

So, it all started with some… evidence. My husband and I noticed the undeniable proof: tiny little mouse droppings in the kitchen. We both reacted with the usual human response—total disgust. From that moment on, the Great Mouse War of the Long Household began. I called in reinforcements (a cleaning service) and ran to the nearest home improvement store, stocking up on every repellent, trap, and secret weapon known to mankind. We even joked about how we were ready to take down Mickey Mouse and his entire gang.

Victory? Not So Fast!

After we cleaned, scrubbed, and sprayed everything, I thought we’d won. Victory seemed imminent. But oh, how naïve I was. Fast forward to my return from a mission trip to Africa, and Mickey and his friends were not just back—they had staged a full-blown comeback. I’m talking like "I-thought-the-house-was-theirs-now- what-the-heck" kind of comeback.

Let me tell you, I hate mice. The idea of these furry little ugly rodents running through MY kitchen, nibbling at my groceries, and leaving me and Al ‘gifts’ (and not the good kind) made my skin crawl. To make matters worse, I had no idea where they were coming from or how to stop them. But when I found mouse droppings in my prayer room—yes, my sacred Jesus space— ya'll I lost it. Completely. Like, “crying-out-to-God-about-a-mouse” level lost it!

When a Mouse Becomes a Spiritual Battle

That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a mouse issue. Oh no, this was a full-on spiritual attack! You might laugh, but I’m serious. Satan would love nothing more than to use these mice to steal my peace, my joy, and my focus on God. I could feel it happening—frustration, irritation, uttering bad words...yelling at Al if he left a crumb in the kitchen, the whole nine yards. But after some deep breaths and a lot of prayer, I decided not to let a few rodents steal my peace.

Nope, not today, Satan. Not today or any day.

Now, maybe for you it’s not mice. Maybe Satan’s bait in your life looks a little different—kids acting up, a frustrating spouse, that coworker who knows just how to push your buttons, or a financial situation that’s stressing you out. Whatever it is, we’ve all got our “mouse in the kitchen” situations that the enemy loves to use to gnaw away at our faith, trust, and peace.

Staying Focused on Jesus

I'm still dealing with the mouse problem. We’ve upgraded our artillery, called in the exterminators, and are praying fervently for victory. But in the meantime, I refuse to lose my focus on Jesus. I’m reminded of 2 Corinthians 4:17, which says:

"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory."

For some people, a mouse might not even register as an issue. But for me, it’s real, and it’s stressful. And whether your “mouse” is a small, furry invader, a health challenge, or financial stress, the truth remains the same: God is at work. You might not see how He’s going to use this situation for your good, but He will. Our challenges are temporary, and God’s glory is eternal.

So, let’s face our mice (literal or figurative) with faith. Because one day, these “light afflictions” will seem like nothing compared to the glory we’ll experience with Jesus.
